Become an Adoptive Parent

You are five steps away from being an adoptive home for a child.

1. Watch Information Session

Learn about the application and approval process, ask questions and make an informed decision about becoming a foster parent through Washoe County Human Services Agency (WCHSA).

2. Complete Application & Background Check

Prospective adoptive parents who have attended an information session and wish to move forward with the process of adoption must meet with the Adoption Family Manager, complete and submit an application, and complete a background check.

3. Pre-Service Training

Prospective adoptive parents are required to complete an 18 hour adoption-specific training designed to prepare adoptive families with the tools necessary to meet the needs of children awaiting adoption. If you are interested in a specific child population, additional training services are available.

4. Home Study & Pre-Licensure Inspection

A WCHSA home study contractor will schedule a time to meet with you and your family to ensure your home passes a basic safety inspection and evaluate your readiness to provide a safe, suitable, and stable home environment for a child.

5. Adoption Inquiry & Matching Process

Upon completion of background checks, training, and approved home study, the Adoption Family Manager will work with you to begin evaluating potential matches. Matching a child with an adoptive family is an intentional process which considers the strengths and expectations of the adoptive family and the needs of a child. Timelines for adoptions will vary depending on numerous factors. Your Adoption Family Manager will go over your individual process in detail.

6. Adoption Finalization

Adoption finalization cannot occur unless the child(ren) has been in the adoptive home a minimum of six months. Until adoption finalizes WCHSA will continue to have monthly contact with the family and child at the adoptive family’s home. Prior to finalization the adoption team will provide the child’s social summary and medical records, and assist you in completing an application for an adoption subsidy. Adoptive parents will also be referred to an adoption attorney who will assist in the finalization process. Once all steps have been completed, a court hearing is set to finalize.
